Lefty Bank Snubs Muslim Customer

Chris Thompson —  Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 1:57 PM

Here's one for the "wtf?" files. Oakland's Community Bank of the Bay has apologized to one of its Muslim customers for refusing to serve her until she took off her headscarf. According to the Trib, the bank has a "no hats" policy to discourage robbers who might want to disguise themselves, and that extended even to hijabs worn for religious reasons. The woman promptly emptied her account and called the Council on American-Islamic Relations, and the bank apologized and promised to apply its security policy with more discretion. Here's the weird thing: the Community Bank of the Bay was explicitly set up to provide microlending to nonprofits and low-income customers who can't get access to credit elsewhere. And yet they have a problem like this? Go figure.

This political fopaux was made by the presidents son...oops I wonder how he got his job. An in Oakland the cultural differences and diversity are very evident so its not excusable by I didn't know or I had never seen this. Conversely if you have ever seen the presidents wife you would wish it was a double bag in case one fell of you had an extra not to mention his cue ball head dress. Now if she had, had a Million Dollars in her account they would had been opening the door and never said anything. bankalchemist.

The thing I find strange these days about the City of Alameda is that people and blogs who are obviously progressive and maybe even left go out of their way to defend the status quo - as if everything that comes out of City Hall or everything that's happening at Alameda Point is just great - while it's the far right conservatives who are asking all the hard questions that's upsetting City Hall. Politics there seems so strange these days.
