City Attorney Says Oakland's Been Violating Charter for Years

For years, city councilmembers have been appointing members to the dozens of boards and commissions that help govern Oakland. But according to the Oakland Tribune, City Attorney John Russo took a closer look at the city charter and realized that, in fact, only the mayor has the power to appoint people to commissions. The ruling has stunned and angered city councilmembers, with Council President taking a particularly strong view at Tuesday's meeting. Will we have a showdown over who gets to pick who sits on the Community Policing Advisory Board? Of course we will.
