Suspect Arrested in Frat-Row Murder

Sat, May 3, 2008 at 7:40 PM

In connection with the stabbing death of 21-year-old Christopher Wootton on Berkeley's frat row around 2:45 this morning, Berkeley police have arrested a 20-year-old Berkeley man, Andrew Thomas Hoeft-Edenfield.

According to a BPD news release issued at 7:15 p.m. tonight: "Officers found a group of approximately 20 college-aged males around Wootton who was suffering from a stab wound to his left side of his upper chest area. BFD paramedics transported him to a local trauma center, where he was pronounced dead. Detectives were able to develop significant leads in the investigation due to the support and cooperation of several witnesses. Witnesses said that the suspect and victim were part of a larger group that was involved in a verbal exchange that quickly escalated to a physical fight. During the fight, the suspect stabbed Wootton, then fled westbound on Channing Way. During the suspect's flight, he tossed a bloody knife that was later discovered by officers. Detectives prefer not to share the arrested suspect's name as it may compromise their continuing investigation. The suspect was booked into the City of Berkeley Jail for one count of murder."—Anneli Rufus

He looks like such a low-life. I don't doubt the guy started out that evening wanting a fight.

The question is will he be able to turn his life around after a couple of decades in prison...It depends how much the hardening and getting raped up the ass will get too him. Chances are two people just lost their lives. But I won't really mourn the loss of this one.

What's up with people like you Jayhein? Do you react in ways like this because you're horrified by our society or are you just a callous byproduct of the same culture that spawned this stupid and needless murder? Or maybe your morality is miles above the fray. In any case, this could happen to you or someone close to you.

I think you'd have a very different response.

UCB Students you are at school to obtain an education, and usually at a great cost to your parents. Yes you are all adults by age and mostly infants by the decisions you make. Be thankful for the opportunity you have before and spend your time enriching yourselfs with the power of knowledge and the wealth of satisfaction it will bring. The world is oing to hell. We fail to see the beauty of the world and focus on what is really not important. There has been many lives shattered by this horrific incident. I seriously doubt the perp nor the victim in this case began there day in anticipation of getting into an argument esculating into a physical altercation with one them being killed. Shelve the rap music, pull up your pants, and grow up. The parents of both of these young men have a long hard road to travel, show a little respect and compassion for them. This issue is not anything but and isolated incident which turn into a tragedy. Smell the roses and have a great day.
