The San Jose Mercury News laid off 31 newsroom employees on Monday, as part of a series of cost-cutting moves since being purchased last year by Denver-based MediaNews. Mercury News managers delivered the bad news to the laid-off employees during a series of phone calls to their homes on Monday morning. All Merc newsroom staffers were told to stay home and wait by their phones in case they were on the list to be called. A list of the laid-off employees is after the jump.

The layoffs included veteran reporter Dan Reed, longtime crime reporter Rod Foo, Sacramento-bureau reporter Kate Folmar, hip-hop reporter Marian Liu, and former Express copyeditor Stewart Applin. The 31 laid-off employees were joined by fifteen other newsroom employees who resigned in the past few weeks. The resignations included Elizabeth Rubinfein, one of the top editors at the newspaper.

Monday represented the second round of layoffs for the Merc in the past seven months. The Merc is a sister paper of the Oakland Tribune and the Contra Costa Times, and is the second largest daily circulation newspaper in the Bay Area after the San Francisco Chronicle. Last December, MediaNews laid off more than a dozen newsroom staffers.
